Removable gooseneck RGN trailer hauling heavy equipment

Removable Gooseneck (RGN) Trailer for Heavy Equipment Transport

A removable gooseneck (RGN) trailer detaches its front section and lowers to the ground so tall or low-clearance machinery can be driven straight onto the deck. CHENLU builds 3- and 4-axle RGN trailers rated 30-100 tons, factory-direct from a China-based manufacturer exporting to 30+ countries.

RGN Basics

What Is a Removable Gooseneck (RGN) Trailer?

A removable gooseneck (RGN) trailer, also called a detachable gooseneck trailer, is a heavy-haul semi-trailer whose gooseneck — the front section that connects to the truck's fifth wheel — can be hydraulically unpinned and lowered to the ground. This turns the front of the deck into a drive-on ramp, letting equipment load or unload under its own power instead of climbing rear ramps.

  • Front-loading capability — ideal for tracked or wheeled machinery that can't climb steep rear ramps.
  • Lower deck height than a fixed-gooseneck trailer of the same capacity, which helps with tall cargo and route clearance.
  • Typical users: construction and mining contractors, equipment rental fleets, and heavy-machinery importers moving excavators, loaders, drilling rigs, and similar equipment.

"Rated load capacity" is the trailer's designed carrying capacity under standard conditions, not a guaranteed payload for every route. Available capacity depends on axle configuration, local road regulations, and final engineering confirmation. Need a different tonnage or axle count? Deck Design

Deck Types Explained: Step Deck vs. Double Drop (Lowboy)

RGN trailers are typically built as either a single-drop (step deck) or double-drop (lowboy-style) design. The lower the well, the more overhead clearance is available for tall cargo — but always confirm exact deck height against your local bridge and road clearance regulations before shipping.

Step Deck (Single Drop)
~120" typical clearance

One deck drop behind the gooseneck. Good general-purpose clearance for most construction equipment.

Double Drop (Lowboy-Style)
~136" typical clearance

A second, lower well between the axle groups — the configuration most RGN heavy-haul trailers use for maximum overhead clearance.

Clearance figures are general industry reference points, not a guaranteed spec for every unit — actual usable height depends on axle configuration, tire size, and local road regulations.

How It Works

How the Gooseneck Detaches: Loading Procedure

The sequence below is a general overview of how an RGN trailer loads, not a substitute for the official operating manual supplied with your trailer. Loading and unloading should only be performed by trained personnel.

1

Position, stabilize & chock

Park the trailer on level, solid ground, apply the parking brakes, and place wheel chocks before detaching.

2

Confirm hydraulic pressure & release the gooseneck pins

Check the hydraulic system is at operating pressure, then unlock the pins connecting the gooseneck to the main deck frame.

3

Lower the gooseneck to the ground

The hydraulic power unit lowers the front section, creating a ramp angle from the ground to the deck.

4

Drive or winch the equipment on

Tracked or wheeled machinery moves directly onto the deck under its own power, or is winched on if needed, under the guidance of a trained spotter.

5

Reconnect, lock & secure

The gooseneck is raised, re-pinned to the truck, and the pin engagement is visually confirmed before the load is chained down for transport.

Always follow the operating manual supplied with your trailer, confirm hydraulic pressure and pin lock-out before towing, and never load or unload without trained personnel present.

Choosing a Model

2-Axle vs. 3-Axle vs. 4-Axle RGN Trailers: How to Choose

Axle count is mainly a function of cargo weight, since each axle group has a maximum rated load and local road law sets the ceiling on total combination weight. Use these general starting points, then confirm against your specific cargo and route:

Lighter loads

2-Axle

Suited to lighter equipment and shorter machinery where total combination weight stays well within standard road limits.

Most common

3-Axle (30-60 tons)

The most common configuration for mid-size excavators, wheel loaders, and general construction machinery.

Heavy machinery

4-Axle (60-100 tons)

Adds axle capacity for larger cranes, mining equipment, and heavier industrial components.

RGN vs. Lowbed

RGN Trailer vs. Fixed Gooseneck Lowbed: Which One Fits Your Cargo?

Loading methodFront-loading — gooseneck detaches and lowers to the groundRear-loading via ramps
Best forTall or low-clearance machinery that can't climb rear rampsEquipment that can be driven up rear ramps; general lowbed cargo
Deck heightTypically lower once detached, for extra overhead clearanceFixed deck height, no ground-level loading option
Mechanical complexityHydraulic detach system adds moving parts to maintainSimpler fixed structure, generally lower maintenance
Typical costHigher, due to the hydraulic gooseneck systemMore economical for standard hauling needs

If your equipment can load from the rear and you don't need the detachable feature, our Lowboy / Lowbed Semi Trailer range is typically the more economical choice. For lighter, more compact loads, see our Folding Gooseneck Trailer range.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an RGN trailer used for?

An RGN (removable gooseneck) trailer moves heavy or tall equipment that can't be loaded from behind a fixed-neck trailer. Detaching the gooseneck lowers the deck to the ground so equipment can be driven straight on — common for excavators, wheel loaders, drilling rigs, and similar low-clearance machinery.

What is an RGN trailer?

RGN stands for Removable Gooseneck. It's a heavy-haul semi-trailer whose front section (the gooseneck) can be hydraulically detached and lowered, turning the deck into a drive-on ramp.

How much weight can a removable gooseneck trailer carry?

CHENLU RGN trailers are available in 3-axle (30-60 ton) and 4-axle (60-100 ton) configurations, with an 80-ton model as the standard build.

What's the difference between an RGN and a lowboy trailer?

A standard lowboy has a fixed gooseneck and loads from the rear via ramps. An RGN's gooseneck detaches and lowers to the ground, allowing front-loading — better suited to taller or lower-clearance machinery.

Can the axle configuration be customized?

Yes — 3-axle or 4-axle, 13/16/20-ton axle ratings, mechanical or air suspension, and a choice of tire/rim specification, configured to your typical cargo weight.

How long does production and shipping take?

Production is typically 10-30 days after deposit depending on trailer type and customization. Ocean transit time depends on the destination port and is confirmed at inquiry.
